Running is my hobby, a passion of mine - something I dream about at night - but it is not what this post is about. Instead, I am talking about "my runner" Easton. Running is not positive for Easton, in fact it is dangerous. It is terrifying... I even panic, sweat, and think about the "what-ifs." Easton runs from me, a lot. In parking lots, he leaves open areas to wander, he "roams" stores, he leaves the house (to the point I don't want to run in the mornings because I am scared he will leave when I am gone), he leaves his bed at night, among other things. In his mind it is likely normal, fun, and an adventure. Tonight I worked out and ran upstairs to change, I briefly saw a flash of yellow in my yard and ran downstairs in my underwear and a t-shirt to grab Easton. He was running up our driveway. When I got to him he said "Hey Mama, I look for rocket ship - outerspace - blast off!" I told him how dangerous this was, how scared Mommy was, but he was seriously looking for a spaceship. We are working on lots of things in OT, and I think I will use the weighted blanket to paperweight Easton to the floor because it doesn't seem to regulate him quite yet! I'm at a point of not knowing what to do. I cannot be on top of him 150% of the time, I am already watching him 100% of the time. People tell me all of the time "you are lucky because you have the knowledge and experience on how to work with Sensory kids," but this leaves my area of expertise and I am lost. Ugh...
Well, I guess we will shape this in to Marathons, by God, he will run Boston in a few years - just wait.
