Personal Development

As a marathon runner, I have dedication, ambition, and drive in my blood. I have to train, stick to a schedule, and be fully invested for months to complete the task at hand.  After a marathon, I find myself aimlessly looking for a goal and become slightly agitated with life… my wheels start turning… so I sign up for another race, get injured, and become even more agitated.  So, I changed my mindset. I realized, not only do I need to train physically, I need to train mentally, so when I complete my goal, I feel rewarded and not aimless.  Personal development is just as important to you well-being as your nutrition and exercise regimen.

To be your strongest you have to:
1)      Sleep – In fact, this may be the most important gift you can give your body!
2)      Exercise
3)      Eat Right
4)      Manage Your Stress – Meditation, journaling, Zen-running, yoga, therapy
5)      Have a goal and make it happen

Some resources that have helped me:
People who inspire me and I read anything they post on FB or on the web: Dean Karnazes (ultrarunner/ ultraman) and Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN… I can suggest more later!

http://www.mariakang.com/  You don’t have to love Maria Kang, but she’s offers an interesting perspective to fitness. She’s the “no excuse queen.”  Maria’s blog has helped me for years, but she’s sky rocketing in fame thanks to American Grit.  I do in fact love her!  What I have taken from her is simple “thoughts become things.”  She makes fitness and nutrition look so easy with three kids and a husband.
http://stupideasypaleo.com/category/podcast/ Oh, how I love this podcast! The podcast is “Harder to Kill” … and episode #18 probably changed my life. It was validating! I listened to it three times through to make sure I didn’t miss a thing! It validated my thoughts on being mother and an athlete.
https://www.ted.com/talks/may_el_khalil_making_peace_is_a_marathon?language=en  This inspires me and brings me hope and joy… it’s my favorite Ted Talk; of course, you can’t go wrong with watching Ted Talks or listening to them! But this one is special!

My favorite quote: "Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or gazelle - when the sun comes up, you'd better be running." ~ Unknown
