Ava walked at 9 months. Elle walked at 10 months. Easton walked at 12 months. While I wish I could stop at that, I really cannot. Easton's walking is unusual. It looks forced, unbalanced, and unsteady. I chased him for the longest time, to be there in case he fell. It did not help, he still fell. He is still struggling at getting up from the floor although he is great at pulling to stand - so we are working on pushing off from the floor. Well back to the "forced, unbalanced, unsteady" gait. At 9 months of age, Easton's physical therapist asked us to get him some shoes. So he started wearing shoes, while he commando crawled, then regular crawled, and then finally stood. Two weeks ago I heard three dreaded letters SMO... SMOs stand for
supramalleolar orthoses, or a shoe insert that adds stability to the ankle for hypotonia and over-pronation. To me is was shocking, because Easton has low trunk tone, not feet, but evidently it is all connected, haha. Now - inserts aren't bad in my opinion in fact I find them kind of cute, until some therapists crunched some numbers for me. EEK! So we went for a second opinion and will likely get a third... and have deferred SMOs for a bit. I want to see if he outgrows the need for them, gets stronger, or I win the lottery. In 6 months, Easton will be 18 months and we will get them then - no excuses - unless they aren't needed then we will party down. Dance party actually and you all are invited.
I'm with you...not a motor expert or anywhere even close...but walking at 12 months sounds like a good start to me!! Right on target.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Elizabeth! Olivia still isn't walking but our ped said anywhere between 12-15 months was totally normal. You gave me a new wrinkle.. I had no idea what SMO's were! Go Easton :)
ReplyDeleteHe's totally walking early for a guy with low tone! We are excited about it - but you know, I have really worked on it. He isn't talking yet, well maybe 3 words...we haven't worked on language, at all! So Olivia is busy being a chatter box and Easton is getting in to everything.
ReplyDeleteLittle Elle is a mess! We still need to get the trio together Summer!
Yes we do! I can come meet you at the Morganton park one day. Let me know :)
DeleteThat's good to know to watch for as Elizabeth keeps doing her PT for low muscle tone. She's 11.5 months and just started pulling herself up to stand, very unsteadily, this week.
